CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting on the city’s South Side that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and injured two others late last month.
Investigators have released surveillance images of the suspected gunman as they continue working to identify and locate the individual responsible for the fatal attack, which occurred in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Authorities hope that members of the public who recognize the suspect will come forward with information that could help solve the case.
Deadly Shooting on South Cottage Grove Avenue
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the shooting occurred at approximately 10:42 p.m. on June 29 in the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.
Police said three young men—two 20-year-olds and one 19-year-old—were walking along the street when a black sedan pulled up beside them.
Investigators say someone inside the vehicle suddenly opened fire, striking all three victims before the sedan sped away northbound on South Cottage Grove Avenue.
Authorities believe the attack happened quickly, leaving the victims with little opportunity to escape the barrage of gunfire.
One Victim Killed, Two Others Survive
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after reports of gunfire and found all three victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
One 20-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released his identity pending notification of his family.
The second 20-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.
The 19-year-old victim was also struck in the left leg and was taken to Trinity Hospital, where he was likewise reported to be in good condition.
Police have not disclosed whether investigators believe the victims were specifically targeted or if any motive has been established.
Surveillance Images Released
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Chicago Police Department has released photographs of the individual believed to be connected to the shooting.
The suspect is described as:
- An African American male
- Between 18 and 24 years old
- Wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt
- Wearing dark-colored pants
- Wearing a gold chain
Investigators are urging anyone who recognizes the individual or has information about the shooting to contact Chicago police or submit anonymous tips through CPD’s Crime Stoppers program.
Investigation Remains Active
Detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage, collecting forensic evidence, and interviewing potential witnesses in an effort to identify everyone involved in the shooting.
Police have not announced any arrests, nor have they released additional information regarding the occupants of the black sedan used in the attack.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who was in the area on the night of June 29, or who may have captured video from nearby security cameras or dashboard cameras, to come forward.

The fatal shooting has added to concerns over gun violence in Chicago neighborhoods, where investigators continue working to solve violent crimes and bring justice to victims and their families.
