Emma Walker was a 16-year-old high school student from Knoxville, Tennessee, whose promising life was tragically cut short in November 2016. Known for her dedication to cheerleading, her strong academic performance and her caring personality, Walker dreamed of becoming a neonatal nurse. Her family has continued to remember her not simply as a victim of a violent crime, but as a daughter, sister, friend and young woman whose life had a great deal of potential.
Walker grew up in Knoxville with her parents, Jill and Mark Walker. Her mother later emphasized that Emma was much more than the circumstances surrounding her death. She was described as outgoing, independent and compassionate, with a big heart for people, animals and especially children. She was also involved in her community, worked a job and was an honors student.
Emma developed a passion for cheerleading after joining her high school team as a freshman at Central High School in the fall of 2014. Friends recalled that she took the activity seriously and loved performing at football games and being part of the school community. It was through cheerleading that she met William Riley Gaul, a football player who became her boyfriend.
At first, Walker’s relationship with Gaul appeared to be a typical teenage romance. Her mother initially considered him friendly and likable. Over time, however, family members and friends became increasingly concerned about his behavior toward Emma.
Friends described Gaul as becoming controlling, particularly regarding Emma’s friendships and activities. The relationship was also marked by intense arguments through text messages and social media. Walker’s family eventually noticed what they considered serious warning signs, including alleged threatening messages.
Emma’s parents became increasingly concerned about the relationship and eventually prohibited Gaul from visiting their home. They encouraged their daughter to end the relationship, although Emma continued seeing him intermittently. By the fall of 2016, when Gaul was attending a nearby college, the relationship had become increasingly troubled.
According to accounts later presented by investigators and Emma’s family, Gaul allegedly struggled to accept the end of the relationship. After Emma ultimately broke up with him in November 2016, investigators said he continued attempting to contact her and allegedly engaged in behavior intended to regain her attention.
The situation became particularly concerning when Gaul allegedly staged a kidnapping and later appeared to be connected to incidents that frightened Emma while she was home alone. Her family became increasingly worried about her safety and began closely monitoring the situation.
On the morning of Nov. 21, 2016, Emma’s mother went to wake her daughter for school and discovered that the 16-year-old had been fatally shot inside her bedroom.
Investigators determined that Emma had been shot once behind the left ear. A second bullet was found in a pillow. Police also discovered bullet holes in the bedroom wall, leading investigators to conclude that the gunfire had come from outside the home.
The investigation quickly focused on Gaul after detectives learned about the troubled relationship and the alleged threats that had preceded Emma’s death. Friends and family members repeatedly identified him as someone who had displayed concerning behavior toward Emma.
Several of Gaul’s friends also approached investigators with information that raised further suspicion. One friend reportedly told detectives that Gaul had taken a firearm belonging to his grandfather. Another provided information about conversations in which Gaul allegedly discussed getting rid of a gun and removing fingerprints.
Investigators eventually connected Gaul to the crime through additional evidence, including cellphone data that placed his phone near Emma’s home around the estimated time of the shooting. Two of his friends also worked with authorities to help recover the suspected murder weapon.
Gaul denied killing Emma and told investigators that he would never intentionally hurt her. He claimed that he had been at his college dormitory when the shooting occurred. Despite his denial, investigators continued building the case against him.
Gaul was arrested on Nov. 22, 2016, one day after Emma was found dead. In January 2017, he was indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, especially aggravated stalking, tampering with evidence and a firearm-related charge.
The case eventually went to trial in May 2018. Prosecutors argued that Gaul had deliberately killed Emma after becoming unable to accept the end of their relationship. His defense attorneys argued that, although he may have fired the weapon, he did not intend to kill Emma and had allegedly been trying to get her attention.
The jury rejected that defense. On May 8, 2018, Gaul was found guilty of all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 51 years.
Gaul remains incarcerated in Tennessee, serving his sentence for the killing of Emma Walker. The case has continued to receive attention through documentaries and true-crime programs, including coverage that has revisited the events surrounding Emma’s relationship, her death and the investigation that ultimately led to Gaul’s conviction.
For Emma’s family, however, the story has always been about more than the crime. Her mother has repeatedly spoken about preserving her daughter’s memory and reminding people that Emma was a vibrant young woman with ambitions, friendships and a deep love for her family and community. A scholarship was also established in Emma’s name as part of the family’s effort to keep her memory alive.
Emma was only 16 when her life ended, but her family continues to remember the person she was and the future she had hoped to build. Her story remains a tragic reminder of how controlling behavior, threats and escalating relationship problems can have devastating consequences.
