SIKESTON, Mo. (KFVS) – The death of a man while in the custody of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety is under investigation by Missouri State Highway Patrol investigators.
Sgt. Brad Germann of the Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the man as 44-year-old Lloyd Gilmore.
Germann said investigators are waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of Gilmore’s death.
Sikeston Department of Public Safety officials issued a statement in response to community questions, saying the death followed an incident in which officers were attempting to take an individual into custody on June 10. The department did not say what led to the arrest or how Gilmore died.
According to the statement, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety asked the highway patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate. The department said it will not release additional details while the investigation is ongoing “to preserve the integrity” of the process.
Police said more information may be released when the investigation is complete, as allowed by law. The statement asked for the public’s patience and understanding.
Scott County Coroner Cody Caudle says his office is investigating the cause and manner of Gilmore’s death.
Caudle says Mr. Gilmore’s remains are in the care of the Scott County Coroner’s Office, “pending a complete medicolegal death investigation.”
