A dispute over a $15 nail repair allegedly escalated into gunfire at a Phoenix nail salon, where police say a woman became angry about being charged to fix a broken fingernail and then fired a gun inside the business while 18 people were present.
Phoenix police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Essence Mire. According to court documents, the confrontation began after Mire disputed a $15 charge for repairing her damaged nail.
Investigators allege that Mire became increasingly upset during the disagreement and eventually punched an employee at the salon. The argument then reportedly moved outside, where authorities say Mire retrieved a firearm.
Police allege that Mire returned with the gun and fired into Element Nail Bar. A bullet reportedly shattered the salon’s front glass door as customers and employees reacted in panic.
At the time of the shooting, approximately 18 people were reportedly inside the business. When gunfire erupted, customers and workers scrambled to protect themselves, with some fleeing through a rear exit while others hid inside the salon.
Despite the presence of numerous people and the gun being fired inside the business, no one was injured. The absence of injuries has been described as a fortunate outcome considering the circumstances.
According to police and court documents, Mire later told investigators that her intention was to frighten the salon employees into repairing her fingernail without charging her.
