RICHMOND, Ind. — A Richmond High School student-athlete was critically injured Saturday night during a summer league baseball game at the Richmond Flying Mummies’ stadium, prompting an emergency response and the early conclusion of the game.
The Richmond Red Devil football program said in a social media statement that two Richmond High School student-athletes were injured while participating in a fan activity between innings during the Richmond Flying Mummies game. While the school did not initially provide specific details about how the injuries occurred, a witness who attended the game told FOX59/CBS4 that the students were involved in an activity in which they ran toward each other while wearing inflatable bubbles.
One of the student-athletes sustained critical injuries, according to the Richmond Red Devil football program. The other student-athlete was also injured, although officials have not publicly disclosed the nature or severity of that person’s injuries.
The incident occurred during the game between the Richmond Flying Mummies and the Kenosha Kingfish. The Kingfish later confirmed that the game ended after six innings, attributing the early conclusion to an incident on the field before the seventh inning.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene following the incident. The Richmond Flying Mummies later expressed gratitude to the Richmond Fire Department, Reid Health EMS, medical personnel who were already at the event and other first responders for their immediate response and assistance.
The identities of the injured student-athletes have not been publicly released, and officials have not provided detailed information about the medical condition of either student beyond confirming that one suffered critical injuries.
The Richmond Red Devil football program said the students and their families are facing an extremely difficult situation and asked the community to support them while they navigate the aftermath of the incident. School officials also said Richmond High School students and players would have access to counseling services on Monday, Aug. 10, to help them process what happened.
Officials encouraged students who are struggling emotionally, feeling overwhelmed or simply needing someone to talk to seek support from school counselors, trusted family members or other appropriate resources.
The Richmond Flying Mummies also issued a statement expressing concern for both injured athletes and their families. The team asked the public to respect the families’ privacy while they deal with the situation and urged the community to keep the young athletes, their loved ones, teammates and everyone affected by the incident in their thoughts and prayers.
The Flying Mummies are members of the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer baseball organization designed to provide college players with an opportunity to develop their skills during the summer season. The 2026 season marks the team’s first year competing in the league.
The circumstances surrounding the injuries remain limited, and officials have not announced additional details about the students’ conditions or whether any further investigation is underway. The school, baseball organization and local community continue to offer support to the injured athletes and their families as they await further updates.
