Eight-year-old Alayna Mances is facing an extraordinarily difficult battle against acute myeloid leukemia (AML), nearly a year after she was first diagnosed with the aggressive blood cancer. Her family is now urgently searching for another treatment option after multiple rounds of chemotherapy failed to stop the disease.
Alayna was diagnosed with AML on October 1, 2025. Her diagnosis marked the beginning of months of intensive treatment, hospital visits, chemotherapy, and uncertainty as she and her family worked toward getting the cancer into remission.
After approximately eight months of treatment, Alayna reached a moment her family had been desperately waiting for. On May 4, she rang the hospital bell, a milestone often associated with completing a major course of cancer treatment and moving toward the next stage of recovery.
The celebration was painfully short-lived. Just 22 days later, on May 26, Alayna’s leukemia returned.
Since her relapse, Alayna has undergone additional rounds of chemotherapy in an effort to control the disease. According to her mother, however, the treatments have not produced the hoped-for response and have instead left the young girl increasingly sick.
Doctors are also investigating whether the leukemia may have spread to Alayna’s skin. Biopsies have been performed, and the family is awaiting the results as they try to understand the full extent of her illness.
The latest developments have left Alayna’s family facing an urgent and frightening situation. They say they have been told that without another effective treatment option, their daughter could have only a few months or less to live.
Despite that devastating possibility, Alayna’s mother is refusing to give up.
One treatment being considered is CAR T-cell immunotherapy, an advanced form of cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells, modified to better recognize and attack cancer cells. Her mother understands that there is no guarantee the treatment will work, but she believes pursuing another option is worth the risk.
The family was presented with several possible locations where they could seek additional specialized treatment, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and a children’s hospital in Seattle.
They chose St. Jude.
For Alayna’s mother, the decision was driven by a determination to pursue every reasonable possibility rather than accept that there are no further options.
“We will not accept, ‘There’s not much more we can do,’” her mother said. “We are going to try everything possible.”
The family describes Alayna as a sweet, energetic, and determined little girl. They say she is “spicy” and “spunky,” with a personality that remains present despite the enormous physical and emotional demands of her illness.
Their greatest hope is simple: that Alayna will have the opportunity to grow up, return to the activities she enjoys, and experience the ordinary milestones that childhood should bring.
Instead of preparing for school, friends, and the future, she is now facing another difficult stage of cancer treatment and the possibility of extended hospitalization and specialized care.
The family is asking for financial assistance as they pursue additional treatment and manage expenses that may not be fully covered. Traveling to a specialized children’s hospital and maintaining care for a seriously ill child can create substantial costs beyond the medical treatment itself.
They are hoping that donations will help them remain focused on Alayna rather than being overwhelmed by the financial pressure surrounding her care.
Alayna’s mother has made an emotional appeal for support, saying she needs to try everything possible to save her daughter and give her a chance to become cancer-free.
“I have to try what I can to save my daughter,” she said. “Please help us get my baby help, get her cancer-free so she can live her life. I do not want to bury our daughter. Cancer cannot have her.”
The family has provided a Cash App account, $5KidsWow, for people who wish to contribute to Alayna’s care. They are also asking people who cannot donate to share her story with others.
For the family, spreading awareness could help connect them with people who are able to provide financial assistance, medical resources, or other support as they pursue another course of treatment.
The journey has already taken Alayna through months of chemotherapy and the emotional high of ringing the bell in May, followed by the devastating news of her relapse only weeks later.
Her family now faces another uncertain chapter, waiting for biopsy results and seeking a treatment capable of controlling a cancer that has proven resistant to the therapies tried so far.
There are no guarantees about what will happen next. The family understands that another treatment may not succeed, but they remain determined to pursue every available possibility with her doctors.
