The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released the identities of the law enforcement officers and the suspect involved in a dramatic officer-involved shooting that followed a police pursuit and barricaded standoff in St. Peter, Minnesota. The incident left a police officer wounded and the suspect dead after an hours-long confrontation inside a residence.
Traffic Stop Escalates Into Police Pursuit
According to the BCA’s preliminary investigation, the incident began on the evening of June 18, 2026, when officers with the Mankato Police Department attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver refused to pull over and fled north on Highway 169, leading officers into the city of St. Peter.
During the pursuit, officers attempted to stop the vehicle by deploying a tire deflation device near Highway 99, but the suspect avoided the stop sticks and continued driving through St. Peter before stopping in the 2100 block of Bunker Lane.
Suspect Barricades Himself Inside Home
After abandoning the vehicle, investigators said the suspect ran into the home of an acquaintance. Officers located an adult woman and a juvenile girl inside the residence and safely escorted them outside before beginning a search for the suspect.
The suspect was later identified as 21-year-old Jordan Michael Donahue of St. Peter. Authorities said he barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting a large law enforcement response and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
Officer Shot During Stairwell Encounter
The BCA said St. Peter Police Officer Austin Buss and Nicollet County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dustin Struckman entered the residence to search for Donahue.
As the two officers moved up a stairwell toward the second floor, investigators say Donahue fired a shotgun down the staircase, striking Officer Buss in the arm and hitting his ballistic vest. Officer Buss and Sgt. Struckman returned fire before retreating from the home so the wounded officer could receive emergency medical treatment.
Officer Buss was first transported to River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic before being airlifted to a hospital in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Officials later confirmed he underwent multiple surgeries and is expected to recover.
Suspect Found Dead After Standoff
Following the exchange of gunfire, law enforcement officers continued efforts to communicate with Donahue for an extended period. When negotiations proved unsuccessful, authorities deployed a drone inside the residence, where Donahue was later found dead from a gunshot wound on the upper floor of the home.
Officials have not yet announced whether Donahue died from law enforcement gunfire or a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The BCA said that determination remains under investigation.
BCA Investigation Continues
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the use-of-force incident. Body-worn cameras worn by responding officers captured portions of the encounter and are being reviewed as part of the investigation.
As required under Minnesota protocol, the BCA will submit its investigative findings to the Nicollet County Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence before determining whether any further legal action is warranted.
Community Rallies Behind Injured Officer
The shooting prompted an outpouring of support for Officer Austin Buss, an eight-year veteran of the St. Peter Police Department. Law enforcement organizations and community members have expressed gratitude that the officer survived the attack and continues to recover from his injuries.
Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the shelter-in-place order issued during the standoff was lifted once the scene had been secured.
