BEECH GROVE, Ind. — Authorities in Beech Grove, Indiana, have launched an investigation after three juveniles were injured in a shooting that erupted shortly after a Fourth of July fireworks celebration concluded near Sarah T. Bolton Park. Police say the violence stemmed from a disturbance between two groups of people as families and spectators were leaving the event.
The incident occurred just minutes after the annual fireworks display ended, turning what had been a community celebration into a crime scene. Investigators are now working to identify those responsible while city officials condemn the reckless act that endangered dozens of innocent bystanders.
Shooting Broke Out After Fireworks Display
According to the Beech Grove Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday to an alley located just south of the 1500 block of Main Street.
Police said a confrontation between two groups of individuals escalated into gunfire as crowds were dispersing from the fireworks celebration at Sarah T. Bolton Park.
Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice said officers were stationed less than 20 yards from where the shooting occurred, allowing them to respond almost immediately after shots were fired.
The rapid police response helped secure the area and prevent additional injuries.
Three Juveniles Injured
Authorities confirmed that three juvenile males were struck during the shooting.
One victim suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The other two juveniles sustained graze wounds and were treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene before being released.
Police have not publicly identified the victims because they are minors.
Witnesses React to the Violence
Residents who attended the fireworks celebration expressed shock and disappointment over the incident.
Makayla Picklesimer, who visited the park the following day, described the violence as heartbreaking.
“It’s unfortunate that that was the choice to pursue a disagreement with violence instead of something else, anything else,” she said.
She also expressed sympathy for the injured teenagers and their families, noting that parents face tremendous emotional pain when their children are caught in violent incidents.
Evidence Recovered at the Scene
Investigators processed the alleyway following the shooting and recovered several pieces of evidence.
According to the police report, officers found:
- A handgun.
- Three spent shell casings.
- A bullet.
- Multiple items of clothing believed to be connected to the incident.
Authorities continue examining the physical evidence as detectives work to determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded and who fired the weapon.
No Suspect Information Released
As of now, police have not released descriptions of any suspects or announced any arrests.
Detectives are reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and gathering surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences in hopes of identifying everyone involved.

Mayor Condemns Shooting
Beech Grove Mayor James Coffman issued a strongly worded statement following the shooting, expressing anger over the violence that disrupted a family-oriented community event.
Calling himself both a lifelong Beech Grove resident and a father, Coffman said he was “furious” that juveniles resorted to gunfire following the city’s annual fireworks celebration.
He emphasized that firing a weapon near a large crowd placed countless innocent lives at risk and praised the Beech Grove Police Department for responding quickly, preventing what could have been an even greater tragedy.
Officials Believe Incident Was Isolated
According to Mayor Coffman, preliminary information suggests the shooting was an isolated incident and that those believed to be responsible are not residents of Beech Grove.
Nevertheless, the mayor stressed that anyone who enters the city and threatens public safety must be held accountable.
He also vowed that the actions of a small number of individuals would not overshadow the strong sense of community that Beech Grove residents have built or discourage future public events.
