A West Virginia high school principal has been arrested and suspended after authorities reportedly discovered multiple recording devices in areas used by female students at Brooke High School in Wellsburg, with additional devices allegedly seized from his home.
Eric James, 53, was serving as principal of Brooke High School when school officials were notified Wednesday that law enforcement was investigating allegations that a recording device had been placed inside a school locker room.
The notification reportedly came after students had already been dismissed for the day. Authorities then began examining areas used by female students as part of the investigation.
Investigators reportedly found four recording devices inside locations associated with female students, including the girls’ physical education locker rooms and a separate dressing area used by the school’s dance team.
The discovery immediately raised serious concerns about student privacy and safety. The devices were removed from the school with assistance from law enforcement officers, school security personnel, and members of the school staff.
Authorities later expanded the investigation beyond the school. According to the information released, investigators searched James’ residence and reportedly confiscated additional recording devices from his home.
James was immediately suspended from his position as principal while law enforcement and school officials continued investigating the allegations.
He was arrested Thursday and faces two felony charges. The allegations include intentionally intercepting or attempting to intercept wire, oral, or electronic communications, as well as breaking and entering a nonresidence.
The charges stem from the alleged presence and use of recording equipment in areas where students had a reasonable expectation of privacy. The investigation will determine what the devices were used for, who may have been recorded, and the circumstances under which the equipment was allegedly placed inside the school.
James is being held at the Northern Regional Jail in Marshall County on $100,000 bond.
The case has drawn significant concern among parents, students, educators, and members of the Brooke County community because the locations involved were used by female students changing clothes and preparing for physical activities.
School officials have emphasized that student safety, security, and privacy are fundamental responsibilities of the education system.

“The safety, security, and privacy of our students are fundamental responsibilities of our school system. Conduct that compromises those responsibilities will not be tolerated,” the district said in a statement.
