DUNBAR TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A 32-year-old Pennsylvania man died after he was allegedly electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wire from active power lines in Fayette County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Authorities identified the man as Aaron Cottrell. Police said his body was discovered around 7 a.m. on May 22 in Dunbar Township after reports of an electrocution near electrical utility lines.
Investigators believe Cottrell was trying to cut and remove copper wiring from energized power lines when he came into contact with live electricity. Officials said a pole saw and a backpack were recovered near the scene, supporting the ongoing investigation into the suspected copper wire theft attempt.
The Fayette County Coroner ruled the death an accidental electrocution. Authorities have not announced any evidence of foul play, but the investigation remains ongoing as police continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Pennsylvania State Police warned that tampering with active electrical infrastructure is extremely dangerous and can quickly become fatal. Utility experts say high-voltage power lines carry enough electricity to cause instant death, serious burns, or massive power outages if handled improperly.
Copper wire theft has become an increasing concern across the United States due to the rising value of scrap metal. However, law enforcement officials continue to warn that stealing from active power lines and electrical equipment poses severe risks to both suspects and nearby communities.
Police emphasized that only trained utility professionals should work on or near energized electrical systems.
