The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a New Mexico woman who vanished nearly a year ago has taken a tragic turn after authorities confirmed that human remains discovered in a national forest belong to her.
According to the New Mexico State Police, human remains found last week in the McGaffrey Ridge area of Carson National Forest have been positively identified as those of Melissa Casias, a longtime employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory who had been missing since June 2025.
The remains were discovered by a hiker on Thursday in a remote area of the national forest. Following the discovery, the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed the identity of the deceased as Casias, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding her disappearance.
Investigators also revealed that a handgun was found near the remains. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the firearm belonged to Casias or whether it is connected to the circumstances of her death. Officials said the Medical Investigator’s Office is continuing its examination and is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The discovery marks a heartbreaking development for Casias’ family, who have spent nearly a year searching for answers. A representative for the family said relatives would not be commenting publicly until they had an opportunity to meet with investigators and receive additional information about the case.
Casias, 53, was reported missing on June 26, 2025, after she failed to report for work. Concern first arose when her supervisor at Los Alamos National Laboratory notified authorities that she had not arrived as expected.
According to her husband, Mark Casias, both he and Melissa worked at the laboratory at the time. He said his wife drove him to work that morning and dropped him off before indicating she needed to complete a task elsewhere at the facility. She never returned.
As investigators searched for clues, family members uncovered troubling details. Melissa’s daughter, Sierra Casias, reported finding her mother’s keys and a cellphone inside the family home in Ranchos de Taos. The phone had reportedly been reset to factory settings, raising additional questions about the events surrounding her disappearance.
Authorities later learned that a family acquaintance reported seeing Melissa walking eastbound along State Road 518 on the afternoon she vanished. The sighting became one of the last known indications of her whereabouts before she disappeared.
Investigators noted that McGaffrey Ridge, where the remains were ultimately found, is located approximately six miles from her home and can be accessed from the same highway where she was reportedly seen walking on the day she went missing.
During the investigation, Mark Casias disclosed that he had discovered documents suggesting his wife was experiencing significant personal stress before her disappearance. However, he declined to publicly discuss the contents of those documents.
Despite the discovery of the remains, authorities have not closed the case. Investigators have emphasized that foul play has not been ruled out. Police previously considered multiple possibilities, including the chance that Melissa may have voluntarily left or accepted a ride from another person before disappearing.
State Police extended their condolences to Casias’ family, friends, and colleagues while confirming that the investigation remains active. Detectives continue to review evidence and await the final findings from the Medical Investigator’s Office, which may provide critical insight into how Melissa Casias died.
